Crossing the First Threshold

You’ve heard the call. It’s brought you from the darkness and you take the first step into your new future. You have your mentors ready to back you up when you need them. Now, you have to take your first steps.

This is the hardest part for a lot of people. You stand in front of the gym door and it looks daunting to you. The blank page in front of you sits while the little line blinks back and forth. Now, you have to actually DO something, and although your mind was made up a few moments before, your will waivers.

I do not actually have the answer here of how to walk through those doors. I don’t have the words to put on your page. However, I know someone who does. Those guys over at Nerd Fitness hit it out of the park with taking 20 seconds, Viking berserkers, and Matt Damon together to create this article.

All you really need is twenty-seconds of courage. What’s twenty-seconds, right?

In twenty seconds, you can walk through that door. You can put a few words on the page. You can get things started. And once things are started, it’s just that much easier.

Steve calls it a temporary “power up” like in video games or like the Viking berserkers. He goes into a great deal about that in the article you can find here, but it gives you a lot to think about.

This blog was me getting twenty seconds of courage. There also happened to be a hundred dollar check in my hand I wasn’t expecting to get the domain name, but that’s another story. I got the blog and I started posting. It’s taken me over a month to get myself organized to understand fully what I want to say, or how to say it, but just starting made each post easier. Now, I’m posting two posts a day on a daily basis.

The gym is the same way for me. Once I start going, I get in the groove of doing it, but that first day is incredibly tough. I have to get out of bed, get dressed, brush my teeth, and then walk over to the gym. It’s so tedious, but before my accident, I went five times that week and didn’t think anything of it. You just learn to overcome your fears and anxieties. It’s harder for some than others, which is why we have the mentors to help us out and encourage us. They can’t hold are hand at the threshold, but they can encourage you along.

Think about Samwise from Lord of the Rings. He had never been past the part of the grass in the Shire. Then, he made his way all the way to Mordor and back! You can do that too, but you just have to take a few seconds to bulk up the courage, power yourself up, and move forward. We all have the power to cross the threshold, and it’ll lead you to the superhero life you want to live.
