100 Days Healthier Me – Day Fifty-Three

I do not cook a lot, which means that I do not use a lot of spices to begin with. I tend to eat out, and then spices are not mine to define. However, I actually cooked last night, and made something out of quite actually everything in my cupboard.

One of my goals over the past couple years is learning how to cook the foods that I love. Now, this is also a goal I have been slacking on to a large degree. A while ago, I bought all the things to make Pad Thai. I have a Thai place right down the street. So, I bought everything. I’ve used bits and pieces of the ingredients, but never actually made the pad Thai.

Last night, I decided to try to throw it together and try to make something akin to Pad Thai. I sautéed some garlic and celery. I had some kidney beans I originally bought for chili. I mixed it all together. I added the spices needed for Pad Thai. I finally threw in some crunch peanut butter, soy sauce, and water to thin it out. The Thai noodles tasted great thrown in. It was just an odd mesh of flavors, but it was incredibly enjoyable to eat.

My next step is to actually buy more things and cook more often. Just like going to the gym, I need to be setting aside the right amount of time to both cook and do the dishes. It’s not actually hard to do, but it’s just one of those things that take time. The biggest thing is that it’s also going to be healthier.

I have made it my point to buy more food instead of eating out as often. This means that Monday, I am going to go to the grocery store and buy stuff. For the next couple days, I have leftovers from my meal I made last night. I need to do a quick look at the spices we have and perhaps even find some recipes that I can eat over a couple different days.

My first week will probably be making two things. I want to start with something that I have made before. I will get together the ingredients to make a vegetarian shepherd’s pie. I love all the stuff that’s in it, and it can be something that I have for several days, while also sharing it with my roommate. It’s a simple recipe, but it does take time. I can get some of my writing done while I’m waiting for things to boil and cook. I also want to try to make something I have never made before, and may try to make homemade hummus which is pretty easy overall from what I’ve heard.

Two meals does not seem like a lot, but it is factor this into my future days. I need to make sure that I set the time aside first to go to the grocery store and then to actually make it. It’s not hard, but it’s not exactly easy. That’s the best way for me to spice things up and keep on the healthy path.
